Because he spent his life trying to kill the one person who saved his village from complete chaos, succeeded, then figured out that he was wrong for all those years? Oh, and then, he went against what his brother tried to prevent and is now launching an attack against them? Not to mention all the drama he made when leaving the village....I mean, Itachi left the leaf strong enough to kill the entire Uchiha clan, so it obviously wasn't preventing him from getting stronger.
